Following their planktonic phase, the larvae of benthic marine organisms must locate a suitable habitat to settle and metamorphose. For oysters, larval adhesion occurs at the pediveliger stage with the secretion of a proteinaceous bioadhesive produced by the foot, a specialized and ephemeral organ. Oyster bioadhesive is highly resistant to proteomic extraction and is only produced in very low quantities, which explains why it has been very little examined in larvae to date. Pollutants via run-off into the ocean represent a potential threat to marine organisms, especially bivalves such as oysters living in coastal environments. These organisms filter large volumes of seawater and may accumulate contaminants within their tissues. Pesticide contamination in water could have a direct or indirect toxic action on tissues or cells and could induce alteration of immune system. Bivalve immunity is mainly supported by hemocytes and participates directly by phagocytosis to eliminate pathogens. Infectious diseases are a limiting factor to the development and sustainability of aquaculture. For mollusc cultures, only prophylactic measures may be applied, their development usually facilitated by the reproduction of the disease under experimental conditions. To develop an experimental infection in Crassostrea gigas, Vibrio strains were isolated and their virulence was experimentally evaluated. Collaboration phenomena between some strains were observed in infection trial, leading to higher mortality rate when two strains are concomitantly inoculated. Molecular characterization of two isoforms of defensin from hemocytes of the oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are important components of the host innate immune response against microbial invasion. We previously characterized the first AMP from an oyster, a defensin, that was shown to be continuously expressed in the mantle of Crassostrea gigas. In this study, we report the cDNA cloning of two new isoforms of the defensin AMP family (Cg-defh1 and Cg-defh2) from the hemocytes of the oyster. The deduced amino acid sequences reveal two peptides of 73 amino acid residues with a mature portion consisting of 43 amino acid residues. The objective of this document is to provide an overview of the research and studies carried out by Ifremer in Poitou-Charentes since the emergence of this phenomenon. La conchyliculture, et principalement l’élevage de l’huître creuse, Crassostrea gigas, constitue la principale activité aquacole française. Cette activité repose, en grande partie, sur le recrutement naturel de l’espèce qui assure 60 à 70% des besoins en jeunes huîtres (naissain) : cette activité de collecte s’appelle le captage. Les deux principaux centres de captage en France sont les bassins d’Arcachon et de Marennes-Oléron.
